Greeting from Asian NIR Consortium

This is a special invitation for you all to the first Symposium of Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) under Asian NIR Consortium that will be held in Japan in November 10-14, 2008. Almost 40 years has past since Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) was appeared as a sophisticate technique for nondestructive analytical method for foods and agricultural products. During this period, NIRS made a tremendous progress as an indispensable technique for process control in various industries as well as a spectroscopic technique in the field of basic sciences. In this regard, Asia consists of the tertiary pole in NIRS community in the world as indicated in the fact that international conferences under International Council for Near Infrared Spectroscopy (ICNIRS) were held in Japan (2nd, 1989) and Korea (10th, 2001) in the past and the 14th conference will be hosted by Thailand in 2009.

Asian NIR Consortium was established as a consensus among participants from China, Japan, Korea and Thailand when Japan-Korea Joint Symposium on NIRS was held in Seoul, Korea in June 2006. One of specific missions of the consortium is to promote transferring of knowledge and know-how on NIRS among Asian countries and arrange the Asian NIRS symposium every two years. Additionally, we decided to call other countries to join the consortium in the future.

We believe that the symposium this time will make a great contribution to strengthen a network for those who are involved in NIRS in the region. Looking forward to seeing you in Japan in November 10-14, 2008.

Mutsuo Iwamoto
Chairperson, Asian NIR Consortium

Greeting from Japan Council of NIRS

It is my greatest pleasure to witness the 1st Asian NIR Symposium held in Tsukuba, Japan as a representative of Japan Council of Near Infrared Spectroscopy (JCNIRS). In the recent years, a remarkable development has been observed in near infrared spectroscopy in Asia, where, I think, is showing the most significant development in the world. In 2009, the International Conference on Near Infrared Spectroscopy will be held in Bangkok, Thailand. I believe that it is truly well-timed to have this 1st Asian NIR Symposium in such a circumstance.

I wish to see as many young scientists from many Asian countries as possible participate in this conference to discuss the development of NIRS in future. This is also a perfect opportunity for the researchers from different Asian countries to exchange with one another as this is a collaborative symposium with JCNIRS. I hope you all enjoy yourself at this symposium as well as your stay in Japan.

Yukihiro Ozaki
Chairperson, Japan Council of Near Infrared Spectroscopy
